The Netflix Swap

I have to play catch up here, since I've been remiss (sophomore year English class with Mrs. Simms vocab word) in blogging.

I will admit, the opening credits had me feeling wary. It felt like the movie was going to try too hard to be hip and modern, but I WAS WRONG!! This movie is BAD. ASS.
Hilary Swank, although horse faced is BAD. ASS.
Frances O'Connor? BAD. ASS.
Were you wondering where Julia Ormond has been all these years? Being a BAD. ASS.

I had done a report on women suffragettes many moons ago, and have always appreciated those women in history that got us to where we are today.
There's a particularly intense and powerful scene where the imprisoned Alice Paul goes on a hunger strike because she has been denied certain rights as a political prisoner.
She is ultimately force fed raw eggs and milk through a feeding tube to keep her alive. I couldn't help but get teary eyed watching this scene and seeing how dedicated she was in furthering her cause and getting us ladies the right to vote.
I may or may not have wondered OUT LOUD, THROUGH TEARS "Would Snooki ever do this?? WOULD SNOOKI EVER DO THIS??"
Our sex tends to forget all the rights we didn't have that others fought for us to have... and all the equalities that we still have yet to attain. It breaks my heart into a million pieces to see women today acting as though nobody has furthered our cause by being ignorant or submissive.
I wanted to karate kick some doors open after having seen this movie. Thank you, Stefania!!

Adapted from Novalyne Price Ellis's memoir "One Who Walked Alone" about her (tumultuous) relationship with Robert E. Howard, a pulp fiction writer and the creator of "Conan the Barbarian".
This is going to sound superficial, but it was hard for me to get into this movie because I think that Vincent D'Onofrio is a creep and Renee Zellweger is... well, she's Renee Zellweger.
HAVING SAID THAT! I still really enjoyed the story and all the elements interwoven within it - Howard's creative process, Ellis's interests in writing and her ability to see Robert as a truly creative and unique individual, the way Howard would say "Hey Girl" a la Ryan Gosling upon seeing Novalyne.
It was a good movie and an interesting story.

Heeeyyyy!! This is where the truth comes out... okay, so Stefania wanted me to see this because it was about real people and a real record label and it was REAL.
So then I felt awesome about giving her all those Sci Fi and Fantasy films to watch.
The movie lost me VERY quickly because:
1 - I have zero interest in the punk rock music scene. Hey, I'm so glad that the genre exists so that people can go to concerts and hear other people screaming into microphones or see them blowing snot rockets on the audience, but it's just not for me and I don't mind saying it.
2 - They broke the fourth wall and pointed it out. If you're going to break the fourth wall, take some cues from Ferris Bueller or Amelie Poulain... just do it, don't talk about it... we'll follow along with you.

In the end, I... and I'm ashamed to admit it, but I'm admitting it! I didn't watch the whole movie. I couldn't do it. I'm sorry, Stefania!! I get it! The inception of new music genres is important! And Factory Records were very influential in exposing the world to punk rock (among other things), but I just couldn't watch the WHOLE movie. You have to give me credit for TRYING, though! I mean... it's not like I swore to never see the highest grossing film of all time or anything. ;)

Next up, arriving today: Junebug.

Glad you like 1 out of the 3.

And you not finishing a film gives me total permission to do the same. Just sayin.' Even though I didn't quit on "The Comeback" when I wanted to stop after the 3rd episode. Nope, I watch all 7 of them on that disc. All 7 painfully long and awkward episodes.

P.S. "24 Hour Party People" was not about punk music. It started out with the Sex Pistols since they ispired the bands that formed and you would hav elearned more about had you finished it, but it wasn't about punk. Sigh.

Also, yes... you can def. not follow through on any of the movies I send your way. I thought I was sending you the first 3-4 eps of The Comeback (they came to me in 2 discs), so sorry about that.
You know who is really punk? That Avril Lavigne!! Am I right?? Hahahahaha...

It can't be that real if Steve Coogan is in it. I'm just saying.
