The Netflix Swap

My friend Stefania and I have entered into an agreement to swap our Netflix account information and surprise each other with movies chosen for one another over the course of this month.
Yes, this endeavor was enough to get me back on my blog after an insanely long hiatus.

The first film Stefania sent me was "Byron" starring Jonny Lee Miller.

Stefania prescribed this movie because she is Team Bronte (I am Team Austen, duh) and she wanted me to have a deeper understanding of the Bronte's appreciation of the "original brooding man". Fair enough.

The movie started pretty slow, my thoughts wandered to the many wonders of Benefiber (I COULD NOT TASTE IT IN MY WATER) and then I tried to understand why some gals would crush on Lord Byron. I mean... he was pretty, sure... but he was also a giant asshole.
And also a creeper - sleeping with his half sister? Gross!
He also had a freak foot... so that's not hot.
This was the archetype of hero that the Bronte's had in mind? I immediately imagined them wearing acid washed empire waist dresses and listening to the 19th century version of White Snake. You know what I mean... you get it...
For as much as I disliked the film (although, Stefania I appreciate your efforts), it helped me put days of yore into perspective. I'm sure he was exciting and different and strange... kind of like the Lady Gaga of his day but with zero talent. HOWEVER, there are plenty other stories in history involving someone who misbehaved yet was NOT a complete jerk face and drunk dripping in syphilis and surrounded by illegitimate children.
MY idea of the original brooding hero will always be a one Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy of Pemberly.
